Of and From the Land: Drawing Landscape with Charcoal... a three day course with artist Kate Boucher.

Explore the rich, expressive possibilities of charcoal in this immersive three-day studio-based course. Whether you're completely new to charcoal or looking to deepen your existing practice, this workshop offers a supportive space to experiment, learn, and grow.
We'll begin with a series of short, guided exercises and demonstrations designed to introduce you to the different types of charcoal and the wide variety of marks they can make. You'll learn how to work with rubbers, cloths, brushes, and a range of paper surfaces to create texture, tone, and atmosphere.
As your confidence builds, you'll move toward more independent work, using your own photographic references—both images you’ve brought along and ones captured in the surrounding landscape—to inspire your drawings. Artist and tutor Kate will share examples of her own work and show how simple tools like smartphones, tablets, and sketchbooks can be used to gather visual material and spark creativity.
This course welcomes all levels, from complete beginners to experienced artists. Together, we’ll explore the subtle nuances and bold gestures that charcoal can bring to landscape drawing—connecting you more deeply to both your materials and the natural world.

On Friday evening there will be an opportunity to make charcoal from driftwood and branches collected from the beach, local woodlands or even just from the grounds of Moor and Sea. While we do the charcoal burn there will be mulled wine and hot chocolate to keep you warm! Your pieces of charcoal will be ready for you to use on Saturday morning!

Some of our reviews...
"Thoroughly enjoyed this course. It was well-paced and gently delivered. Kate finds a good balance between demonstration and guidance which encouraged me to try images I would previously have shied away from. Thank you, Kate.
Brilliant course. I’ve always hated charcoal but wanted to challenge myself & liked the images that Kate had used to advertise the course. I’m so glad I signed up for it I’m totally converted & now love charcoal. Kate took us through graded exercises to give us confidence to tackle scenes from the beautiful landscape. She is a star tutor!
