Drawing through printmaking:Alternative lithography with Scarlett Rebecca
A three-day workshop with artist Scarlett Rebecca

Lithography is the perfect process for artists who want to combine drawing with printmaking. Lino lithography is an accessible and low-toxic lithographic process that doesn’t require specialist equipment, so you can reproduce the process at home.
Using lino as our print surface means we’re also able to include all the fantastic qualities of relief print.
Over the course we will be utilising lino as our matrix, using it as a surface from which we will reproduce drawn marks using a myriad of drawing materials, including transfer papers. We will also be combining carved elements using lino in the traditional relief way and layering colours using the lino as a surface for monotype.
This course is suitable for beginner printmakers and those who would like to explore a new printmaking process and take their drawing to the next level.
Day One:
- introduction and demonstration of preparing lino, using transfer papers, and using drawing materials
- creating imagery directly onto the lino
- creating imagery onto transfer papers outside of the studio
- transferring collaged imagery from transfer papers to lino
- processing the lino
Day Two:
- exploring carving and relief lino layers
- printing multiple lithographic layers
- drawing and processing developed ideas
Day Three:
- printing day determined by individual participant’s developed ideas
- group discussion & review

Some of our reviews...
Inspiring weekend painting with friends.
really enjoyed this three day exploration of the wonders of the vivid pigments of pastels. Richard is a great artist and also an inspirational teacher. We all benefitted from his informative demonstrations, and I particularly liked his guidance that allowed individual expression and style. I enjoyed being able to stay on site in the comfortable and stylish Moor and Sea accommodation, where Bridget and Richard gave us a warm welcome and the just delicious soup lunches. The only disappointment was the snow which meant that I couldn’t explore more of the beautiful coastline, but that can be rectified by booking on to another of the Moor and Sea courses :)
I thoroughly enjoyed my three days studying with Richard. He was a kind, insightful and encouraging teacher and I certainly gained confidence in this medium during the course. I left feeling very inspired and encouraged! Bridget and Richard were perfect hosts; accommodation was thoughtfully presented, spotless and very comfortable. Their catering was absolutely delicious home-cooked wholesomeness!
